Capito Announces Federal Funding for Projects Across West Virginia

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced resources from several federal agencies for projects that will bolster health services, economic development, infrastructure, academic and defense research, park improvement efforts, and energy projects across West Virginia.

HHS FUNDING: Senator Capito, Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS), announced grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for a variety of health projects in West Virginia.

  • $8,465,926 in HHS Head Start funding to the Southwestern Community Action Council, Inc. (Huntington, W.Va.).
  • $7,678,870 in HHS Health Center Cluster funding to Valley Health Systems, Inc. (Huntington, W.Va.).
  • $5,698,218 in HHS Head Start and Early Head Start funding to the Coalfield Community Action Partnership, Inc. (Williamson, W.Va.).
  • $2,755,380in HHS Health Center Cluster funding to Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center (Grantsville, W.Va.).
  • $2,596,878 in HHS Health Center Cluster funding to Bluestone Health Association, Inc. (Princeton, W.Va.)
  • $2,320,719 in HHS Health Center Cluster funding to Community Care of West Virginia, Inc. (Rock Cave, W.Va.)
  • $2,313,795 in HHS Health Center Cluster funding to Shenandoah Medical System, Inc. (Martinsburg, W.Va.)
  • $2,246,690 in HHS Health Center Cluster funding to Preston Taylor Community Health Center (Grafton, W.Va.)
  • $1,799,114 in HHS Health Center Cluster funding to WomenCare, Inc. (Scott Depot, W.Va.)
  • $1,527,367in HHS Health Center Cluster funding to E.A. Hawse Health Center, Inc. (Baker, W.Va.).
  • $1,289,553 in HHS Health Center Cluster funding to Clay-Battelle Health Services Association (Blacksville, W.Va.)
  • $1,288,005 in HHS Health Center Cluster funding to New River Health Association, Inc. (Scarbro, W.Va.)
  • $1,229,006in HHS Centers for Disease and Prevention National Center for Chronic Diseases Prevention and Health (CDC-NCCDPHP) National and State Tobacco Control Program to the West Virginia Department of Health and Humans Resources (Charleston, W.Va.).
  • $1,166,575 in HHS Health Center Cluster funding to Monongahela Valley Association of Health Centers, Inc. (Fairmont, W.Va.)
  • $1,067,886 in HHS Health Center Cluster funding to Camden-on-Gauley Medical Center, Inc. (Camden on Gauley, W.Va.)
  • $1,038,908 in HHS Health Center Cluster funding to Pendleton Community Care, Inc. (Franklin, W.Va.)
  • $1,008,333in funding from HHS's Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to West Virginia University (WVU) (Morgantown, W.Va.) for its "Healthy Start Initiative" that aims to improve the well-being of new and expecting mothers.

ARC FUNDING: Senator Capito, Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, also announced resources from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) she secured for Marshall University for the Appalachian Cybersecurity Training, Innovation, and Opportunity Network (Appalachian ACTION).

  • $500,000 in ARC funding to Marshall University (Huntington, W.Va.) to support Appalachian ACTION.

COMMERCE FUNDING: Senator Capito, a member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, announced that resources from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration (EDA) will go to the Mason County Development Authority for its Disaster Recovery Strategic Plan for West Virginia.

  • $240,000 in EDA funding to the Mason County Development Authority for its Disaster Recovery Strategic Plan for West Virginia.

DOE FUNDING: Senator Capito helped secure funds from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for West Virginia University (WVU) for research examining methods of extracting rare earth elements from acid mine drainage.

  • $5,000,000 in DOE funding to WVU (Morgantown, W.Va.) for rare earth element extraction research.

USDA FUNDING: Senator Capito also delivered funding that she fought to secure in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Rural Partners Network to Generation West Virginia to support high-speed internet expansion projects in Lincoln, McDowell, Webster, and Fayette Counties. Senator Capito also secured funding for a rural economic development project.

  • $610,116 in USDA funding to Generation West Virginia (Morgantown, W.Va.) for high-speed internet expansion projects in southern West Virginia.
  • $416,907 in USDA Rural Development grant funding to Camden-on-Gauley Medical Center, Inc. (Camden-on-Gauley, W.Va.) for telehealth equipment meant to bolster primary care and mental health services in Webster, Nicholas, Lewis, and Fayette Counties.

DOT FUNDING: Senator Capito also announced resources from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for a pipeline infrastructure project in Welch, W.Va. through the DOT's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration, which Senator Capito had previously advocated for in a letter of support. Senator Capito also secured funding for an economic development initiative through the DOT's Thriving Communities Program.

  • $2,115,394 in DOT Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration to the Welch Gas Cooperative Association (Welch, W.Va.) to replace a portion of a natural gas pipeline
  • $2,000,000 in DOT Thriving Communities Program funding to the Fayette-Raleigh Metropolitan Planning Organization (Summersville, W.Va.) for economic development in the region.

NEH FUNDING: Senator Capito also announced a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for WVU to support stipends to help researchers that looking to publish their findings.

  • $6,000 in NEH funding to WVU (Morgantown, W.Va.) for researcher stipends.
