Garmin’s new Varia radar is a dashcam for your bike

Garmin have just unveiled details of their latest version of the Varia, the RCT715, which uses Garmin's already reliable rearview radar and tail light but now combines this technology with a camera for added reassurance!

Garmin Varia RCT715 - at a glance:

  • See and record what's behind you with a built-in camera
  • Automatically detects incidents and saves footage
  • Rearview radar detects vehicles approaching from behind up to 153 yards
  • Battery life up to four hours with radar and tail light on solid high or night flash

Making you stand out and be seen more than ever the new Garmin Varia RCT715 can detect vehicles approaching from up to 153 yards away, helping you to see what's behind you. You can also sync the Varia up with your Edge bike computer or compatible smartphones so you get an alert to warn you.

More crucially, Garmin has now included a 1080p camera in this model, which continually records your ride and automatically stores footage before, during, and after events if it detects an issue. You can simply retrieve your recordings, transfer videos, and/or customise the camera settings using Garmin's Varia smartphone app.

So let's take a closer look at the Garmin Varia RCT715….

Bright Tail Light

The Varia boasts a bright and intelligent rear light to ensure you are visible in all situations - during the day, Garmin say that the light can be seen from up to a mile away!

Don't worry if you frequently ride in groups; the Varia features a peloton mode that gives a low-intensity flash that is gentle on other cyclists' eyes when riding in a group.

Built-In Camera

The built-in camera records what is behind you and automatically detects incidents and saves footage before, during and after the event occurs. The Varia is capable of recording sharp, clear video in 1080p with 30 frames per second, or adjust resolution to 720p to extend battery life for longer rides.

Rearview Radar Detection

The Varia RCT715 rearview radar provides visual and auditory alerts for vehicles approaching from behind at up to 140 metres. To warn you about traffic while you ride, the RCT715 effortlessly interacts with your Garmin bike computer or the Varia mobile app on your paired smartphone. You can playback and transfer footage using the Varia app too.

Long Battery Life

The Garmin Varia is designed for long days in the saddle; with a battery life of up to four hours with radar and tail light on solid high or night flash, five hours on solid low, and six hours on day flash - all with the camera recording at 1080p.
