Hiking Trails in the Southwest

The Parks and Recreation Department will offer free hiking and walking events twice a week for families and friends.

Hiking Trails in the Southwest will be on Mondays and Fridays, from May to June at various locations. Beginner or experienced hikers or walkers of all ages are welcome to join in these explorations for social engagement and improvement in health.

All participants will have until the day before to register for their selected hiking event. In-person registration will be at Frank O'Brien Papen Community Center, 304 W Bell Ave. Online registration can be found here - under Adult and Family Programs.

Please keep in mind that some of these locations will require a parking pass to hike.

Participants should wear sturdy shoes and come weather prepared with hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and plenty of water.

  • 9 a.m. Monday, May 6, 2024.
    • Slot Canyon (2.5 miles).
    • Meet-up location: 17198 N. Valley Drive.
  • 9 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2024,
    • Dripping Springs Trail (3 miles).
    • Meet-up location: Dripping Springs Natural Area, 15000 Dripping Springs Road.
  • 9 a.m. Monday, May 13, 2024.
    • Soledad Loop Trail (3.4 miles).
    • Meet-up location: 13300 Soledad Canyon Road.
  • 9 a.m. Friday, May 17, 2024.
    • Mesilla Valley Bosque Trail (1.6 miles).
    • Meet-up location: 5000 Calle del Norte, Mesilla, N.M.
  • 9 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2024.
    • Las Cruces Dam (6.2 miles).
    • Meet-up location: Dam Trail.
  • 9 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2024.
    • La Cueva Loop Trail (2.9 miles).
    • Meet-up location: Dripping Springs Natural Area 15000 Dripping Springs Road.
  • 9 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2024.
    • Filmore Canyon Trail (2.1 miles).
    • Meet-up location: From the junction of Interstate 10 and I-25, follow I-25 north one mile to the University Avenue exit. Turn right (east) on University Avenue. University Avenue will turn into Dripping Springs Road. Follow Dripping Springs Road east for about five miles until the pavement ends. Continue an additional 2.5 miles to the junction of Dripping Springs Road and Baylor Canyon Road. Further ahead on Dripping Springs Road, you will find the paved entrance to Dripping Springs Natural Area.

    • Pine Tree Trail (4.2 miles).
    • Meet-up Location: Aguirre Springs Campground.
  • 9 a.m. Monday June 10, 2024.
    • "A" Mountain (5 miles).
    • Meet-up location: The parking lot is accessed from University Avenue/Dripping Springs Road, just east of the Sonoma Ranch Boulevard intersection. West side of "A" Mountain.
