#CorporateKim slashes worker safety net today – Daily High Five

And the heat is back! Here are plenty of ways to stay cool and even save some energy during this heatwave. The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is also reminding us how to keep our pets safe while the temps remain high. Remember, if it's too hot for you, then it's too hot for our furry friends too!

We hope you're taking a break in the air conditioning while you check out today's top story:

1. TAKING AWAY EARNED BENEFITS : This morning, Governor Reynolds signed a bill into law that cuts unemployment benefits by ten weeks. This legislation will only further hurt workers who have been laid off, keep wages low, and make Iowa a more unwelcoming state. Share this tweet below to let the Governor know how harmful this bill will be for working Iowans.

Click to tweet: We know that taking away our hard-earned benefits won't solve the #ReynoldsWorkforceCrisis. It's time for @IAGovernor to invest in working families and make wealthy corporations pay what they owe! #CorporateKim

After that, take a look at the other items making headlines today:

2. LESS SAFE CHILDCARE: Gov. Reynolds signed another law this morning which allows child care centers to watch more children at one time and allows teenagers to provide unsupervised care. Not only does this make our children less safe, but it also increases work for already underpaid workers. We need lawmakers to push for actual solutions, like raising the wage for childcare workers.

3. PROTECTING LGBTQ RIGHTS: The Biden Administration is taking a stand against attacks on the LGBTQ community. President Biden signed an executive order yesterday aiming to end conversion therapy, expand health care access and promote safe learning for LGBTQ people. Discrimination has no place in our country and we commend President Biden for taking this important step.

4. VACCINES FOR KIDS: Children under the age of 5 may soon be able to get vaccinated against COVID-19. The FDA's outside vaccine panel made the recommendation to start giving kids the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Shots could be in little arms as soon as next week!

5. INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS: Thanks to President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, Iowa is receiving $5 billion, much of which will go toward improving our state's highways and bridges. You can find out where those dollars are going at the link above. Just a friendly reminder that all of Iowa's Republican House members voted against this bill, along with Senator Joni Ernst.

And don't forget: We're hiring! Progress Iowa is looking for a Deputy Press Secretary to join our team.
