RMT condemns Avanti West Coast over proposals to axe key jobs in Birmingham

RAIL UNION RMT is today stepping up its fight to protect all jobs at the Avanti West Coast Customer Resolution Centre in Birmingham, which are under threat from plans to relocate them to the parent company, First Group's, contact centre nearly 100 miles away.

The union is demanding that the company halt its plans, which risks the loss of over 60 jobs and would be damaging to the local economy in Birmingham.
RMT believes that the roles can continue to be carried out from Birmingham, and the real reason for these proposals is an attempt by First Group to cut costs with no regard for the impact on staff.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said:
'Avanti West Coast is ploughing ahead with these damaging proposals that could see over 60 job losses and damage to the local economy in Birmingham at a time of economic uncertainty.
'The company's dismissive attitude to industrial relations throughout this process makes clear that it has little regard for the impact on its hardworking employees of its plans.
'RMT is demanding that Avanti West Coast withdraw its proposals and instead commit to retaining all jobs in Birmingham.

'The union will take all steps necessary to protect our members' jobs and conditions.'
