Recap: Revs kick off road trip with heavy loss in Atlanta

ATLANTA, GA. - The New England Revolution (10-13-5; 35 pts.) fell to Atlanta United FC (12-8-6; 42 pts.), 7-0, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday night in the clubs' first ever meeting. Atlanta scored four goals in the first half and added three more on the other side of halftime to secure the win.

The Revolution finished the match with nine men as two players, midfielder Xavier Kouassi and defender Antonio Delamea, were issued red cards following two separate video review incidents in the first half.

New England returns to action this Saturday, Sept. 16, when it will remain on the road to play Sporting Kansas City at Children's Mercy Park. The match kicks off at 8:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast locally on CSN New England, where Brad Feldman and Paul Mariner will be on the call. Fans may also listen on the radio in English on 98.5 The Sports Hub and in Portuguese on 1570 WMVX Nossa Radio.

Revolution Play Atlanta United FC for First Time in Club History

  • Tonight's match marked New England's first against expansion side Atlanta United FC, which joined MLS ahead of the 2017 season.
  • The Revolution's record in first meetings against expansion clubs drops to 6-5-4 with the loss.
  • New England won its first meeting against this year's other expansion side - Minnesota United FC - by a score of 5-2 on March 25.

Delamea, Kouassi Issued Red Cards in First Half via VAR

  • Midfielder Xavier Kouassi and defender Antonio Delamea were issued red cards in the first half after two video review incidents.
  • Kouassi was issued a red card for a serious foul on Atlanta midfielder Yamil Asad in the 16 minute, while Delamea was issued a red card for denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity in the 38 minute.
  • This marks the seventh time in club history the Revolution have had two players sent off in a single game, the last coming on May 23, 2015, against D.C. United.

Revolution Make Four Changes to Starting XI

  • Revolution Head Coach Jay Heaps made four changes to the club's starting lineup from its most recent MLS match on Sept. 9 vs. the Montreal Impact, as Andrew Farrell, Diego Fagundez, Xavier Kouassi, and Je-Vaughn Watson replaced Chris Tierney, Scott Caldwell, Teal Bunbury, and Kei Kamara.
