***VOSOT script below for consideration***

WHAT: The first of six public forums to help inform the search for the next UH president took place today, April 30, on the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa campus. Each forum, scheduled by the University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents, is scheduled for 90 minutes, and is available in-person and virtually via Zoom.

WHY: The forums are part of the listening phase promised by the regents, which included a public survey that was completed in February and received more than 2,000 responses. WittKieffer, the Chicago-based firm hired to assist in the search, is using the feedback from the public forums and surveys, along with input gathered from interviews with the regents and the Presidential Search Advisory Group (PSAG), to develop the position description and leadership profile. The regents are expected to review both at the May 16 monthly board meeting. If approved at that time, WittKieffer will begin the recruitment process.

WHEN: Following the UH Mānoa forum, there will be forums at UH Maui College (May 1), Hawaiʻi Community College-Pālamanui (May 3), UH Hilo (May 3), Kauaʻi CC (May 6) and UH West Oʻahu (May 7). See this UH News story for the complete schedule and Zoom information you may share with the public.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

  • The PSAG is made up of UH stakeholders and will make candidate recommendations to the search committee, which consists of all 11 regents.
  • The board announced at its March 21 meeting that it plans to name finalists in September and announce the next president in October.
  • The new president will begin in January 2025 and will succeed David Lassner, who announced in September 2023 that he will retire by December 2024.

"I think the main goal is just really to listen to what people want and what visions people have for the next president. Understanding what the community wants and what faculty, students, staff want is really important."

"I think local context is really important. So someone that understands Hawaiʻi and the islands, and understands culture and context is more likely to be successful as the next president of the UH System."
