Sunrise Skylights Drive-in Open-air: Switzerland’s first 10-day open-air drive-in festival

Due to the coronavirus crisis, all major events scheduled to take place before the end of August have been canceled. The Swiss events calendar for summer 2020 was looking bleak: no open-air concerts, no theater or music festivals. This was not just a catastrophe for the organizers, but also for many local artists. Fortunately, one unique open-air drive-in festival means Switzerland won't have to miss out on that summery festival vibe completely.

Rock on four wheels: how it works

Sunrise Skylights Drive-in Open-air will take place from July 10 to 19, 2020 at Zurich Airport. For several days, well-known Swiss and German-language musicians will put on a show every evening for around 300 cars. That's right: cars. This original concept revolves around the idea of offering concerts that guests can enjoy directly from their private vehicle for several nights in a row. Up to four people per car can roll onto the concert grounds and party, stocking up on food and drinks in the drive-thru area. On the festival grounds, a huge, covered stage with two side stages and LED screens awaits. The perfectly mixed sound makes its way directly into festival guests' cars via a dedicated radio frequency.

André Krause, CEO of Sunrise, is looking forward to this special event: 'Switzerland is known for bold and innovative solutions - especially in unusual times. We are proud to support the Swiss open-air festival summer as well as the local music scene, and look forward to bringing people together for this one-of-a-kind event.'

The organizers RedSpark and Rock-it Event are jointly hosting the festival. Not only did they manage to win over naming partner Sunrise with their idea, but also Zurich Airport. 'The airport has supported our plans from the very beginning and offered us an incredible location,' says Fabian Villiger from RedSpark. Parking area P17 is situated right next to Zurich Airport's runway. 'This makes it the perfect location. There's plenty of space, no direct neighbors, and easy access to the highway. We're very pleased with this great partnership, which has allowed us to turn this unique idea into reality in no time,' adds Fabian Villiger.

H.P. Baxxter and DJ Antoine will kick off the festival

Starting off the 10-day open-air festival, H.P. Baxxter and DJ Antoine will be first to take to the stage. On other festival days you can look forward to Nena, Robin Schulz, Loco Escrito, Bastian Baker, Luca Hänni and the comedian Michael Mittermeier. Sunday, July 12 will be Family Day. Anyone looking for a special experience for young and old alike can enjoy the well-known children's band from St. Gallen 'Marius & die Jagdkapelle' from CHF 99.-, directly from their family car.

'We consciously focused on creating a line-up of Swiss and German-speaking artists to help them get some last-minute work for the summer,' Patrick Hofstetter from Rock-it Event explains. This type of event will be uncharted territory for some performers -but Patrick Hofstetter isn't worried about the musicians' ability to interact with their fans: 'We will witness new and very special means of interaction. Instead of their vocal cords and hands, visitors will be wearing out their indicators and headlights.'

Those who want to rock out to live music in their car and secure a ticket (from CHF 199.- per car) for the first-ever Swiss drive-in open-air festival shouldn't wait too long, as capacity is restricted to 300 cars per festival day. Tickets are available at
