At the Khmelevka training ground, the conduct of combat operations during the landing on an unequipped coast was worked out. The crews of large landing ships, marine units of the Baltic and Northern Fleets, as well as marines of the Northern Fleet (NF) were involved in the exercise.

The actions of the units were observed by the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov.

According to the legend of the exercise, the marines of the Northern Fleet were tasked with seizing a bridgehead and ensuring the landing of assault equipment to develop an offensive deep into an unfamiliar territory, which, according to the exercise plan, was defended by the marines of the Baltic Fleet.

Before the start of the landing, a detachment of fire support ships launched an artillery strike on the coast to suppress long-term firing points, as well as military equipment and manpower of the opposing side. Further, the landing was supported by multifunctional Su-30SM fighters and Su-24 front-line bombers of the Baltic Fleet.

Groups of military engineers were brought ashore on high-speed boats, who conducted mine clearance of approaches to the shore and prepared the place of disembarkation of equipment, marking it with signal flares.

The landing was carried out directly from the large landing ships Korolev, Minsk, Kaliningrad and Olenegorsky Gornyak. More than 40 BTR-80 armored personnel carriers with the personnel of the units of the Northern Fleet marine corps unit went to the float. Directly on the coast, the marines with equipment landed from small amphibious hovercraft Mordovia and Evgeny Kocheshkov.

At the naval training ground, the marines of the NF worked out the tasks of breaking through the defence of a mock enemy from the sea and striking at the defending forces.

In turn, the assault units of the marine corps of the Baltic Fleet solved the tasks of defence of a section of the sea coast.

The day before, the personnel of the assault units were alerted, marched to the area of the alleged landing of the mock enemy's assault troops and equipped the positions. Countering the landing forces, they conditionally attacked the enemy using grenade launchers, armored personnel carriers BTR-82A, self-propelled artillery installations Nona, multiple rocket launchers Grad.

In total, 10 surface warships, boats and support vessels of the two fleets, up to 10 aircraft and helicopters of the Baltic Fleet naval aviation, more than 200 units of military equipment, as well as about 2000 military personnel were involved in this episode of the exercise from both sides.

The joint strategic exercise (JSE) of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus takes place every two years in accordance with the decision taken by the heads of the two states.

The Zapad-2021 exercise is the final stage of joint training of the armed forces of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation this year.

The practical actions of the troops (forces) take place in the period from 10 to 16 September 2021 at nine training grounds located on the territory of the Russian Federation, in the Baltic Sea, as well as at five training grounds of the armed forces of the Republic of Belarus.

In total, up to 200 thousand personnel, about 80 aircraft and helicopters, up to 760 units of military equipment, including 290 tanks, 240 guns, multiple rocket launchers and mortars, as well as up to 15 ships take part in the JSE Zapad-2021 on the territory of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus.

The maximum number of personnel involved in the exercise of military units subject to the Vienna Document of 2011 on the territory of the Russian Federation does not exceed 6,400 military personnel.

The return of the military authorities and troops to the points of permanent deployment after participating in the exercise is planned until mid-October of this year.
