Sinn Féin spokesperson on the Irish language, Peadar Tóibín TD, has said that there was a pressing need for the implementation of the Irish Language Act in the North as was established by law in the St Andrew's Agreement.

Teachta Tóibín was in Stormont earlier this week taking part in trilateral talks between the British government, the Irish government and the Assembly.

Deputy Tóibín said:

'The talks on the establishment of a government in the North started once again on Monday. There is a fortnight remaining to make a deal or else the involved parties will have to call another election.

'Sinn Féin's leader of the Assembly Michelle O' Neill and Conor Murphy MLA and I were representing Sinn Féin and the necessity for the progression of the Irish Language Act. The Secretary of State for the North, James Brokenshire was in attendance as was the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Charles Flanagan.

'The Irish Language Act is assured and protected by the Agreement - recognised, international legislation which was signed by every party involved. We must now focus on how to best implement the Act.

'Despite the false allegations that were thrown around by the DUP, it has been demonstrated by both Máirtín Ó Muilleoir MLA and Conradh na Gaeilge that the Act could be put in place without huge cost.

'Our language rights and democratic rights cannot be quashed. We are looking forward to a positive result when negotiations come to a close.' ends

Rí-ghá le Acht na Gaeilge a chur i bhfeidhm - Tóibín

Dúirt an Teachta Peadar Tóibín go raibh rí-ghá le cur i gcrích Acht na Gaeilge ó thuaidh mar atá leagtha síos go reachtúil i gComhaontú Chill Rímhinn.

Bhí an Teachta Peadar Tóibín i gCnoc an Anfa inné in mbun cainteanna tréthaobhacha idir rialtas na Breataine, rialtas na hÉireann agus an Tionól:

Dúirt an Teachta Tóibín:

'Thosaigh na cainteanna Dé Luain in athuair le rialtas a bhunú sa Tuaisceart. Tá coicís ann le hidirbheartú a dhéanamh nó ní bheidh aon dul as ag na páirtithe leasmhara ach toghchán a ghairm.

'Bhí mé féin, ceannaire Shinn Féin ó thuaidh Michelle O' Neill agus an feisire Conor Murphy ann ag déanamh ionadaíochta ar son Shinn Féin agus cás Acht na Gaeilge a chur chun cinn. D'fhreastal Státrúnaí Thuaisceart Éireann James Brokenshire agus an tAire Gnóthaí Eachtracha Charlie Flanagan ar na cruinnithe.

'Tá Acht na Gaeilge deimhnithe agus cosanta ag an gComhaontú - reachtaíocht aitheanta, idirnáisiúnta agus sínithe ag gach ball a bhí páirteach. Is gá dúinn anois díriú ar an mbealach is fearr an tAcht a chur i bhfeidhm.

'In ainneoin na líomhaintí bréagacha a bhí caite mórthimpeall ag an DUP, tá sé léirithe ag an bhfeisire Máirtín Ó Muilleoir agus Conradh na Gaeilge araon nach mórchostas a bheidh i gceist leis an tAcht a chur i gcrích.

'Ní féidir ár gcearta dteanga agus ár gcearta daonlathacha a chur faoi chois. Táimid ag tnúth le toradh fiúntach ag deireadh na hidirbheartaíochta.'
