IRI Condemns Politically Motivated Convictions in Burma

Washington, DC - Today, International Republican Institute (IRI) President Daniel Twining issued the following statement in response to the politically motivated conviction of State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint by Burma's illegitimate military junta.

"IRI condemns the verdicts in these politically motivated trials and calls for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, Win Myint, and all political prisoners who have been unjustly detained by the illegitimate military government. The people of Burma have clearly demonstrated through the November 2020 elections and the massive resistance to the February 1, 2021, coup that they want and will accept nothing less than a democratic future.

"The verdicts are nothing more than this brutal junta weaponizing the law against Aung San Suu Kyi, Win Myint, and all those calling for a return to democracy in Burma."
