CARRINGTON, N.D. - The first NDHSAA state tournament of the 2021-22 school year is off and running. Day 1 at the 2021 NDHSAA Class B Girls Golf State Tournament played at CrossRoads Golf Club is in the books.

Grafton junior Ainsley McLain sits atop the individual leaderboard through Round 1, scoring a 1-over 73. McLain, who finished sixth individually at state last spring, carded five birdies in her round.

McLain's lead is just one stroke as defending Class B girls golf medalist Avery Bartels of Kindred finished with a 2-over 74. Bartels was even through the first nine holes, but four bogeys slowed her momentum on the back-nine.

In the team standings, Heart River holds a 22-shot lead through Day 1 scoring a team total of 325. The Cougars were paced by senior Madisen Jarrett, who scored a 7-over 79. Junior Mackenzee Schneider (80) and senior Grace Nantt (82) also finished in the top 10 for Heart River through Day 1. Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter is in second place in the team race entering Tuesday's final round.
