Player Profile: Mahe Fonua

Hull FC fans don't have to wait too much longer to see one of their favourite players return to the UK - Mahe Fonua will soon be back in the country to begin his preparations for the 2020 campaign.

The man with the mullet became an instant fan favourite when he arrived at the KCOM Stadium from Melbourne Storm in 2016, with his friendly and comedic personality warming the hearts of many Hull FC fans.

He also built a strong reputation on the field, scoring fourteen tries in his maiden season for the Black & Whites. That's not including his famous score in the 2016 Challenge Cup Final to get the Airlie Birds on the comeback trail against Warrington Wolves.

What followed under the Wembley arch saw the history books rewritten, as Hull FC won their first-ever match at the nation's great stage.

Fonua helped FC repeat that feat just 12 months later, scoring two tries in the 18-14 triumph over Wigan Warriors in the 2017 Challenge Cup Final.

In both the 2016 and 2017 campaigns, the 26-year-old also assisted Hull in making back-to-back Super League play-off semi-finals.

But as he prepares to return from Wests Tigers for another crack at Super League, the Tongan international is hoping to go one step further and get to Old Trafford.

What he had to say

'From the get-go when I first arrived at Hull FC in 2016, the fans welcomed me with open arms and they even followed my career back to the NRL - even though I haven't been at the club for the last two years, they've shown me some mad love. I respect that a lot with them supporting me even though I haven't been in Black & White - but I'm back now!

'The supporters are a huge part of the club being successful. When the KCOM is bouncing, it makes a huge difference on the field and I can't wait to feel that again.

'Me and the boys have a great chemistry too and I can't wait to show that on the field again.

'Certain aspects of my footy game improved during my time at West Tigers. I went back to the NRL with some more big-game experience having played in Super League semi-finals and Challenge Cup Finals, and that has helped me progress.

'I played under two great coaches in Ivan Cleary and Michael Maguire and I have learned a lot from them and I'm grateful for the knowledge they have passed onto me.'
