Data Science and Knowledge Transfer Hub for Trade and Intermodal Transportation in the SLGL Corridor

May 2, 2024

HEC Montréal, in partnership with CIRANO (Centre interuniversitaire de recherche en analyse des organisations), is participating in a major project: the creation of a digital twin of the economy of the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes (SLGL) corridor, representing the third largest economy in the world.

This project has $5.2 million in funding, including $2.6 million from Transport Canada under the National Trade Corridor Fund.

It is part of CIRANO's Data Science and Knowledge Transfer Hub for Trade and Intermodal Transportation in the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes Corridor, which was launched on March 21, 2024.

The project involves several HEC Montréal faculty members, including Ari Van Assche from the Department of International Business, as well as dedicated postdoctoral researchers.

The scientific committee consists of Martin Trépanier (Polytechnique Montréal), Julien Martin (UQAM), Loubna Benabbou (UQAR) and Thierry Warin (HEC Montréal).

A unifying and innovative project

The Hub aims to:

  • Leverage advanced data science methodologies to accurately capture the complexity of the SLGL region's trade and multimodal transportation systems;
  • Innovate, through the creation of a digital twin, by providing a renewed perspective on economic challenges, supply chain vulnerability and environmental issues;
  • Improve risk management by strengthening decision-making based on reliable data analytics for trade and intermodal transportation in this region.

Several partners are taking part in this initiative: CIRRELT (Interuniversity Research Centre on Enterprise Networks, Logistics and Transportation); IVADO (Institute for Data Valorization); UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal) and UQAR (Université du Québec à Rimouski); Polytechnique Montréal; SODES (St. Lawrence Economic Development Council); Innovation maritime; Ministère des Relations internationales et de la francophonie and Ministère de l'Économie, de l'Innovation et de l'Énergie.
