Honors for Doug Mills

The Times won 11 awards from the White House News Photographers Association's annual Eyes of History contest, which honors excellence in visual journalism.

Doug Mills won both top prizes awarded by the competition. He was named Photographer of the Year and his photo of Donald Trump exiting Air Force One as a streak of lightning appears in the sky won Political Photo of the Year.

'What a wonderful and well-deserved honor for Doug, whose work, always a beautiful encapsulation of technical mastery and keen observation, is the gold standard for political photography,' said Meaghan Looram, director of Photography. 'Doug's masterful photography is only surpassed by his sterling reputation as a reporter, a leader, a mentor and a friend - as colleagues and competitors alike will vocally attest. Doug is a treasure, and I'm so honored and grateful to work with him.'

'Doug is not only a brilliant photographer whose stellar work graces the walls of The Times's Washington bureau,'' said Elisabeth Bumiller, Washington bureau chief. 'He's also a wonderful friend and a terrific reporter who is an essential member of our White House team.''

Doug also won five first place awards, one second place award and two Awards of Excellence in various categories.

Gabriella Demczuk, a contributing photographer for the magazine, also won an Award of Excellence in the Portrait/Personality category for her portrait of Attorney General William Barr.
