Stantec completes infrastructure improvements for Quay Sarasota

Leading global design firm Stantec has completed infrastructure improvements in Sarasota, Florida as part of Quay Sarasota-a new mixed-use waterfront district positioned on a 14-acre downtown site on Sarasota Bay. The project includes roadway and infrastructure improvements to serve the private mixed-use development as well as a roundabout at the intersection of US 41 and Fruitville Road, stormwater drainage improvements, and a scenic multi-use recreational trail. These improvements support the master plan for The Quay, which aims to bring luxury residential, upscale retail, boutique hotel, state-of-the-art office space, and active public spaces to the city. The Quay infrastructure improvements position the area for the next phases of the downtown waterfront development.

Developed through a public/private partnership with the City of Sarasota and GreenPointe Developers, LLC, Stantec's Community Development team provided site planning, entitlement, engineering, permitting, landscape architecture, and construction management services for the project. The two-lane roundabout replaces a traditional signalized intersection to create a pedestrian friendly environment and is currently circulating traffic through the city to the barrier islands. Combined with the scenic multi-use recreational trail, these projects help promote the community's desire for transportation solutions that support walkability and improve traffic safety while enhancing connectivity and traffic flow between downtown and the Bayfront area.

These projects also include solutions that enhance the city's stormwater infrastructure and address roadway flooding. For years, Sarasota Bay's tidal reflection led to major flooding from small rainstorms that would shut down two to three lanes of US 41. The Stantec team designed an improved drainage conveyance to replace the outdated stormwater ditch system. As a result, the final design reduced flooding elevations on US 41 and increased the downtown's outfall capacity. Further, the addition of a sediment sump, improved stormwater infrastructure within US 41, and an on-site treatment facility serving the private development has led to improved water quality discharging directly into the Sarasota Bay.

'Projects like Quay Sarasota symbolize what it means to build strong, resilient communities. We're proud of our contributions to make the city's downtown a safer, more connected urban space,' said Melanie Smith, senior project manager at Stantec. 'We look forward to continuing our work with the City of Sarasota and GreenPointe Developers in successfully delivering the projects outlined in the master plan.'

As part of its work on The Quay project, Stantec provided civil engineering services for the Ritz-Carlton Residences-an 18-story luxury condominium building in the heart of the district. The firm also provided civil engineering, site survey services, and streetscape and landscape design for the Belle Haven-the first historic building in Sarasota to be registered with the Florida State Historic Preservation Office.
