UNESCO and SADC to convene regional meeting on making TVET work

UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSA) in collaboration with the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) and Malawi's Ministry of Labour will convene a regional meeting on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) on 26 and 27 October 2021. The meeting will be held at Ufuli Gardens and Hotel Conference Centre in Lilongwe, Malawi.

About 22 participants are expected to take part. These include directors or their representatives from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Malawi will have a 6 member team that will include the director of TVET Audrey Matemba, his deputy Richard Chirwa and Acting Chief Executive Officer of TEVETA Malawi.

Ms Vera Kamtukule, Deputy Minister of Labour will open the meeting. UNESCO ROSA will be represented by Ms Carolyn Medel-Anonuevo, the Senior Programme Specialist and head of Education Unit while the SADC Secretariat will be represented by Prof Robin Sennassee Raja, the Senior Programme Officer for Skills, Education and Training.

The objectives of the regional meeting include revisiting the Strategic Framework and Implementation Plan for Development of TVET in SADC (2018 - 2027), validating SMART indicators for the monitoring and evaluation of the plan, validating a draft report on the status of TVET in the various countries in the region, developing concrete proposals to strengthen TVET systems on the region and sharing results and lessons learnt from the Skills and Technical Education Programme (STEP) that was implemented in Malawi between March 2016 and July 2021.
