EEA Joint Committee incorporates 41 legal acts into the EEA Agreement

On 26 April, the EEA Joint Committee met for its third meeting in 2024 in the Berlaymont building in Brussels. The meeting was presided over by the EU Chair, Nicolas von Lingen, from the Secretariat-General of the European Commission. Iceland's Ambassador and EFTA Chair, Kristján Andri Stefánsson, co-chaired the meeting on behalf of the EEA EFTA States.

A total of 41 legal acts were incorporated into the EEA Agreement in the meeting through 28 Joint Committee Decisions. Among them were several important decisions, including in the field of the environment and in statistics.

During the meeting, Ambassador and EFTA Chair Kristján Andri Stefánsson highlighted the importance of the recent gathering of the EEA EFTA Prime Ministers and the members of the European Council on 22 March in the context of the 30th anniversary of the EEA Agreement:

"This was not only an occasion to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of the EEA Agreement, but also to reaffirm the strong partnership between the EEA EFTA States and the EU."

1 January 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the Agreement on the European Economic Area, bringing together the three EEA EFTA States - Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway - and the 27 EU Member States in one Internal Market.

The EEA Joint Committee is responsible for the management of the EEA Agreement and is a forum in which views are exchanged and decisions taken by consensus to incorporate EU legislation into the EEA Agreement. The Committee comprises the Ambassadors of the EEA EFTA States and representatives of the Secretariat-General of the European Union.
