Eagle Scout Provides Weatherproof Boxes for Flag Disposal

'An American flag is not just another piece of cloth,' says Eagle Scout Alex Birch with Boy Scout Troop 1113 - and he has constructed weatherproof boxes people may use to dispose of American flags.

Birch designed the boxes, which themselves feature stars and stripes.

Boxes have been placed at:

  • Fire Station 3, 4081 University Drive (24-hour access)
  • City Hall Atrium, 10455 Armstrong Street (open from 8:30 am to 5 pm weekdays, excluding holidays), and
  • St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. 3700 Old Lee Highway (please contact the church directly for information about flag box access)

Scouts from Troop 1113 will periodically collect the flags and dispose of them properly using the proper flag ceremony.
