Spring commencement at UAB will be April 26-27

Spring commencement for the University of Alabama at Birmingham will take place in three ceremonies Friday and Saturday, April 26-27.

This semester, at least 2,963 students are eligible to graduate, and more than 1,871 students are expected to walk in the ceremonies, which will be held inside Bartow Arena.

The first ceremony, for all graduate students, including master's, educational specialist and doctoral, will be at 3 p.m. Friday, April 26. This semester, the UAB Graduate School will confer the university's highest degrees on 112 doctoral students from 21 states and seven countries, representing 29 disciplines.

The second ceremony, for undergraduate students graduating from the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education, will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 27. Later that day, the third ceremony for all other undergraduate students will be at 2 p.m. Doors will open one hour before each ceremony.

There is no limit on the number of guests who can attend the ceremonies, and parking is free. Thirteenth Street South between Sixth Avenue and University Boulevard will be closed to through traffic Friday.

For all three ceremonies, the Department of Music's Faculty Brass Quintet will perform, and The Alabama Pipes and Drums will lead the procession. Senior music majors Abigail Coats, Austin Green and Jackson Hanle will sing the national anthem and the UAB alma mater for the ceremonies, respectively.

Professor Casey Weaver, M.D., the Wyatt and Susan Haskell Endowed Chair for Medical Excellence in the Department of Pathology in the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, will carry the mace for all three ceremonies. His contributions as a scientist and mentor, along with his service to UAB, earned Weaver the annual Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award. This is the highest honor bestowed by UAB's academic health center on a faculty member who has advanced the frontiers of science and made outstanding contributions to education, research and public service. In 2022, Weaver was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest and rarest honors offered to scientists in the United States. Only two other UAB researchers have been selected for what many call the "science hall of fame."
