Vantacor insecticide enhances an already outstanding product
The major benefits for pulse and cotton growers of Altacor insecticide have been enhanced by its successor in the marketplace, FMC's new Vantacor® insecticide.
For many years, Altacor has been the benchmark insecticide for the control of caterpillar species in cotton and summer and winter pulse crops, renowned for its ability to control different sized pests with good residual activity between applications.
FMC's new Vantacor insecticide, replacing Altacor in the marketplace, contains the same active ingredient, Rynaxypyr which has been improved from a 350WG to a 600 SC and is available in a 2.5 litre pack, as opposed to the 5 kilogram Altacor® option.
FMC insecticide product manager, Leandro Posteraro said the new formulation is a natural evolution from Altacor.
'Vantacor is a robust insecticide with a sustainable edge, delivering a much lower use rate and less packaging,' he said.
'It's easy to measure, mixes really well and suspends easily. We have retained all the really positive features of Altacor and added some excellent benefits.'
The Vantacor product also sees a reduction in the withholding period for many of the pulse crops from 28 days to 14 days, meaning it can be successfully used to protect crops later in the season.
Vantacor controls Cotton bollworm and Native budworm in winter pulse crops including Chickpea, Faba/Broad bean, Field pea, Lentil, Lupin and Vetch, and in summer pulse crops controls, Mung bean, Soybean, Azuki/Adzuki bean, Cow pea, Navy bean and Pigeon pea. Vantacor also controls Bean podborer, Cotton bollworm, Native budworm, Soybean looper, Bean looper and Irrorated tabby.
'Vantacor controls all of the major Lepidoptera species in pulse crops and cotton, so is an excellent choice for growers when pest damage is noted in the field,' Leandro said.
'The broad spectrum of Lepidoptera pests includes some really difficult to control options such as Bean podborer which can make its way into the plant and away from the direct spray application.'
'With its excellent translaminar action, Vantacor can move from one side of the leaf to the other and effectively control pests.'
Leandro said Vantacor should be applied early in the pest infestation cycle to keep pest populations below damaging levels.
'While Vantacor does have good activity on larger sized grubs, it makes sense to control the pest early to minimise damage and maximise yields. Growers receive close to immediate crop protection as the grubs stop feeding as the insecticide is ingested.'
Vantacor does have ovi-larvicidal activity, so the neonate ingests residues on the outer surface of the egg membrane and is quickly paralysed. Vantacor is registered for two applications per season, so an excellent strategy is to use these back-to-back if caterpillars return in the weeks following the first spray.
'Regularly scout crops and monitor for larvae. Apply Vantacor as the larvae reach threshold numbers, keeping in mind the pulse industry insecticide resistance management strategy,' suggested Leandro.
'In most cases a single spray will be enough to control the insects, but it is good to know a second application is available if needed. If a third spray is required rotate to an alternative mode of action,' he added.
'Vantacor also has excellent health and safety credentials with low toxicity to beneficial anthopods, mammals, fish and birds.'
'With its good margin of safety, its is an excellent choice for applicators and workers entering the fields after the spray has dried.'
'Caterpillar pests can cause significant damage in a small amount of time if left unchecked,' Leandro said. 'Vantacor insecticide will rapidly control those pests and has excellent residual activity to help maximise yield and quality.'
