American Legion Dale Mabry Post 139 will present certificates of appreciation to McKay Bay Waste to Energy employees for their assistance in the flag burning project of unserviceable flags.

More than 1,000 unserviceable U.S. Flags were reverently burned at the McKay Bay Waste to Energy Plant in February. American Legion Post 139 members say over the past two years the organization has had an increase in unserviceable U.S flags due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

More than a dozen City of Tampa employees will receive recognition for their outstanding support and professionalism on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the McKay Bay Waste to Energy Plant located at 107 S. 34th Street .

The Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags was passed by the 19th National Convention of The American Legion in New York, Sept. 20-23, 1937. The ceremony has been an integral part of the American Legion ritual since that date.

According to the American Legion, when a flag has served its useful purpose, it should be destroyed, preferably by burning. For individual citizens, this should be done discreetly so that the act of destruction is not perceived as a protest or desecration.
