PRESS RELEASE

Gov't to Boost Domestic LED Industry

The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) will continue to boost production by domestic LED industry to reduce the dominance of imported LED lights, which currently stands at around 70 percent. Several domestic LED light manufacturers have been able to produce high-quality and large-capacity LEDs, and even export their products overseas.

These are the results of preliminary surveys carried out to prepare a national development roadmap for domestic LED industry. The surveys were made by the Technical Team of Center for Research and Development of Electricity, New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation Technologies (P3TKEBTKE) of Ministry of EMR to several LED manufacturers in Tangerang, Bogor, Cikarang, Bandung, and Bekasi on 8-16 June 2021.

Head of P3TKEBTKE, Haryanto, explained that the domestic production of LED lights has continued to grow as shown by the annual sales quantity, from 22 million units in 2012 to 60 million in 2019. The quantity should be increased because currently only 52 percent households use LED, while the remaining use CFL lights (41 percent) and incandescent lights (7 percent).

'In 2030, demand for LED lights is projected to increase to 165 million units,' said Haryanto in Jakarta (21/6).

The use of local LED lights not only saves energy and reduces emissions but also supports domestic industries to withstand the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Haryanto further explained that the LED lighting manufacturers surveyed have been able to produce high quality products that pass the Indonesian national standard SNI, with an average power factor of above 90 percent and high efficacy.

Efficacy is the efficiency value of converting electrical energy into light. It is used to compare light output with energy consumption, and measured in lumens per watt (lm/W). LED lights use less energy to produce the same level of brightness as conventional lights, so LEDs are more efficient. LED lights can save energy by at least 14% when compared to CFL lights.

The first survey was conducted at PT Daya Mandiri Terbarukan (DMT) in Tangerang, Banten. The company's main products are LED for public lighting, solar public lights, LED light bulbs, LED tube lights, showcase LED lights, high bay LED, and LED floodlights. In addition to its own brand FujiLED, PT DMT is an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of several leading brands of lighting.

PT DMT's Section Head, Ono, explained that his company, which is part of Trinitan Global Pacific (TGP) group of companies, is committed to producing high-quality LED lights with a power factor above 95 percent and efficacy above 100 lm/W. Ono explained that most of PT DMT's products have complied with SNI. PT DMT has also planned to collaborate with national and overseas companies to produce LED lights.

The second survey was performed to two companies in Bandung, namely PT Solarens Ledindo and CV Sentosa Electric. PT Solarens Ledindo is a manufacturer of public lights, tube-type LED lights, high bay LEDs, aviation and marine lighting, floodlights, industrial lights, and other outdoor lights.

President Director of PT Solarens Ledindo, Irvin, said his company is committed to developing the LED lighting industry, especially public lights, in Indonesia. Chair of Association of Indonesian Luminaires (Alindo) added that the efficacy of Solarens public LED lights is quite high, at least 160 lm/W. In addition, Solarens LED lights can be easily upgraded with smart technology features such as smart dimmer and light sensor.

CV Sentosa Electric is a member of Indonesian Integrated-Lamp Manufacturing Industry Association (Gamatrindo). The company produces LED light bulbs under the brands Keibu, Sook, and Mona. It also produces various types of LED lights such as ceiling LEDs, fan LEDs, downlight panels, emergency LEDs, public light LEDs, solar public light LEDs, tubes LEDs, high bay LEDs, 12-Volt DC LED bulbs, and spotlights. Additionally, the company is an OEM of other LED brands in Indonesa.

General Manager of CV Sentosa Electric, Ahmad, explained that his company produces LED light bulbs that have passed SNI/IEC 62560:2015 for LED light safety. According to Ahmad, the SNI labeling is important to maintain public confidence in the quality of the company's Keibu LEDs.

'The efficacy of Keibu LEDs is at least 110 lm/W and we are committed to continuously increase the efficacy rate,' said Ahmad.

The next industry surveyed was PT Honoris Industry in Ciawi, Bogor. This member of Indonesian Electrical Lighting Industry Association (Apperlindo) is formerly known as an OEM for Fujifilm cameras and other optical components. In 2009, however, PT Honoris Industry started its CFL/LHE light business and in 2012 began producing its Hori LED lights. Some of PT Honoris Industry's products are LED bulbs, candles, flood lights, public lights, solar public lights, high bays, down lights, and T8 tubes.

Sales & Marketing Project Director of PT Honoris Industry, Widarto, explained that the company, which was founded in 1982, produces high quality goods, prioritizes environmental conservation, and is committed to reducing the global warming. It employs 680 workers and is an OEM for global light brands with a market in the United States.

Another manufacturer surveyed is PT Focus Indo Lighting in Cikarang, Bekasi. Also a member of Alindo, the company produces a variety of public lights with brand names such as Cosmic, Opera, Galaxy, Bimasakti, and Mars, solar public lights with brand name Atria, and flood lights with brand names Caves, Samba, and Serayu.

President Director of PT Focus Indo Lighting, Anshar Muchtar, explained that his company fills the needs of central and regional governments' projects. The products of PT Focus Indo Lighting have been listed on the e-catalog of the Indonesian National Public Procurement Agency (LKPP) for the last two periods. The company also participates in Public Private Partnership (PPP) to manage and save energy of public lighting systems.

Anshar went on to detail that his company has continuously innovated in product development, especially for smart public lighting. It has three technologies of smart public lighting on offer, namely radio frequency (RF)-based, power line communication (PLC)-based, and Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM)-based. The selection of smart public lighting technology should consider the characteristics of an area. For example, RF technology is cheaper, in terms of initial and operational costs, but is more suitable for use in areas that are not densely populated. For urban areas, PLC technology is better because it does not interfere with other RF networks.

For the record, the technical team will continue its surveys to a number of LED manufacturers in Batam and East Java. (IY)
