SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Sanford Health virtual care leaders will share insights and examine new possibilities about the future of health care at the 2024 American Telemedicine Association NEXUS Conference. The three-day event takes place May 5-7 in Phoenix, Arizona.

ATA Nexus 2024 will explore the new phase of virtual care, convening industry leaders and front-line providers who are defining the 'new normal' for tech-enabled care.

David Newman, M.D., medical officer of virtual care at Sanford Health, will discuss disruption in rural health care during his presentation on May 7. In addition to his role as medical officer of virtual care, Newman practices endocrinology at Sanford Health in Fargo, North Dakota. He also serves as an assistant professor of medicine at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Services.

"Virtual care is often the only way some of my patients in rural North Dakota can get sub-specialty care in the winter due to harsh weather," said Newman. "The support of telehealth is crucial, and it is imperative we continue to adapt and use this technology to keep our patients healthy and connected to care no matter where they live."

This fall, Sanford Health is scheduled to open the Sanford Virtual Care Center in Sioux Falls, the hub of its $350 million virtual care initiative. The initiative includes an education institute with a simulation center, an innovation center with accelerator spaces to co-develop solutions for the future of care delivery, as well as a patient and family experience lab designed like a living room to test new tools and technologies.

Sanford Health continues to take innovative approaches to challenges facing rural health care. Examples include expanding its Graduate Medical Education program, leveraging AI-enabled technology, automation and predictive analytics to reduce administrative burdens that lead to burnout; and incorporating new care delivery models such as remote patient monitoring to better serve rural populations.
