Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center Performs 100th Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) Procedure

May 16, 2022

On May 13, 2022, Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center vascular surgery team met a milestone by successfully performing it's 100th and 101st Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) procedure. Board-certified vascular surgeons, Dr. John Gray and Dr. James Tretter performed the procedures.

Transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR), uses a device to briefly reverse the direction of blood flow in the treatment of carotid artery disease. With blood (and any clots) flowing away from the brain while the physician operates, the patient's risk of stroke during the procedure is lower. TCAR, which takes the place of the traditional carotid endarterectomy (CEA) procedure, is less invasive with the lowest reported carotid stenting stroke rate of 1.4%.

"We are happy to reach this milestone at Conemaugh Memorial. This procedure provides for a smaller incision and minimal scarring, less time in the operating room and a faster recovery and has become an integral part of our treatment for patient with severe carotid disease", says Dr. Gray.

Conemaugh Physician Group - Vascular Surgery also provides surgical and endovascular care for carotid artery disease, DVT (deep vein thrombosis), aneurysm repair varicose veins and dialysis access. Appointments can be made by calling 814.534.9194
