State Secretary Dr Raščan gives an address on World Bee Day in Ghana

State Secretary Dr Stanislav Raščan addressed via video link the participants of the festivities on World Bee Day in Ghana organised by the Ghana Beekeepers Association. He stressed the vital role of bees in ensuring food security and the value of expert exchanges between Slovenia and Ghana for the protection of bees.

Bees are among the most important pollinators with a key role in food production, sustainable agriculture and biodiversity, also contributing to the mitigation of climate change and preservation of the environment. "I am pleased that on World Bee Day Ghana focuses on threats posed by climate change to bees and other pollinators. Climate change and environmental degradation seriously threaten food security," underlined State Secretary Dr Raščan.
He went on to express his satisfaction with Slovenia and Ghana exchanging know-how and joining forces to protect bees in cooperation with the Slovenian company Medex.
In 2017, on Slovenia's initiative, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 20 May as World Bee Day. This date was selected as it is the birthday of Anton Janša, an 18th century pioneer of modern apiculture and a recognised expert in this field.
