On May 5, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had talks with Foreign Minister of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela Jorge Arreaza.
The situation in Venezuela and related developments were the main subject of the talks. The sides reiterated the unacceptability of using force in the domestic political struggle or provoking acts of violence and clashes with the armed forces. The Russian side expressed solidarity with the friendly people and government of Venezuela and firm support for a political and diplomatic settlement of disputes in accordance with the country's Constitution and without preconditions. The importance of international assistance to foster an inclusive Venezuelan dialogue between responsible and constructive political forces was noted.
The ministers exchanged views on interaction at the UN and other international platforms and stressed the need for strict observance of the UN Charter by all countries, as well as for joint efforts to counter unilateral sanctions and external interference in the affairs of Venezuela, especially the use of force or the threat of force.
They also discussed current bilateral issues and outlined further steps to deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries.
