Am Law Gives Shout Out to Akin Gump for Precedential Federal Circuit Win

(Washington, D.C.) - A team from Akin Gump received a 'shout out' from The American Lawyer in its Litigator of the Week series for a precedential ruling it achieved from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in a case pertaining to the Equal Access to Justice Act (EAJA).

Am Law notes that Akin Gump, alongside co-counsel from the Veterans Legal Advocacy Group, represented pro bono client Robert L. Smith, an Army veteran who filed claims for benefits for medical conditions he attributed to his 20 years in the military. The court held that the government still has to cover attorney's fees for initial case reviews for litigants who prevail in civil actions under the EAJA, even if the litigants do not succeed on all their claims

Akin Gump Supreme Court and appellate counsel Rachel Bayefsky argued the appeal for Mr. Smith. The team also included Supreme Court and appellate practice head Pratik Shah, partner Julius Chen and associate Joshua Tate.
