The alliance between the ENAIRE Foundation and PHotoEspaña is reinforced this year with powerful exhibitions

The ENAIRE Foundation has been participating in PHotoEspaña since 2016, almost a decade-long partnership that will be reinforced in this, the 27th edition, with two outstanding exhibitions at the Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid, and two more exhibitions at the Naves de Gamazo in Santander.

The institution led by Margarita Asuar thus confirms the "enormous conceptual alignment and commitment that links the ENAIRE Foundation with PHotoEspaña and its director, María Santoyo". The successor of Claude Bussac, heading up the most important photography festival in Spain, has chosen as the central theme the concept of perpertuum mobile, "which connects clearly with the vision of the ENAIRE Foundation by emphasising the dynamic nature of photography and its importance as the most democratic artistic medium", explains Margaret Asuar.

Margarita Asuar highlights the conceptual alignment and the commitment that links the ENAIRE Foundation to the international photography festival directed by María Santoyo and organised by La Fábrica

This affinity with the event launched in 1998 by Alberto Fesser and our dearly departed Alberto Arnaut, founders of La Fábrica, will materialise in an exhibition from the ENAIRE Foundation that is once more rooted in excellence. The Foundation's Managing Director recalled the "enormous void and the important legacy left by Alberto Arnaut, who passed away last year, in the national and international cultural landscape".

Asuar noted that "the most innovative proposals of PHotoEspaña year after year motivate the participating institutions to outdo themselves with each edition".

The Board of the PHotoEspaña Festival is made up of representatives of the main companies and institutions that support the international festival, which include the ENAIRE Foundation, represented by Margarita Asuar as its Managing Director.

From 29 May to 31 August, the Royal Botanical Garden will be home to an exhibition featuring the three winners and fifteen finalists of the ENAIRE Foundation's 2024 Photography Awards, and the honourable mention of PHotoEspaña.

A retrospective will also be presented dedicated to the ENAIRE Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award, which this year, in its fifth edition, was presented to Paloma Navares, a globally recognised Spanish artist. In previous editions, the ENAIRE Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award was given to great visual artists such as Javier Vallhonrat, Montserrat Soto, Alberto García Alix, and José Manuel Ballester.

MAV and its Art Biennial

This sampling is also a project selected by MAV - Women in Visual Arts - for its Contemporary Art Biennial, which will be officially presented in June at the Thyssen Museum. This is the first collaboration with MAV to showcase women's art.

In Paloma Navares's retrospective exhibition, entitled "Luz de intuición" (Light of Intuition), the common thread is her deep concern for all things feminine and the social role of women, with works of great beauty and visual and social impact confirming the relevance of the author's approach. This exhibition is curated by the ENAIRE Foundation through Ángeles Imaña, in concert with the artist herself. The ENAIRE Foundation has had works by Paloma Navares in its collection since 2011.

In addition, the ENAIRE Foundation is organising a video projection at the Navares de Gamazo art centre, in Santander, dedicated to Paloma Navares called "Sombras del sueño profundo" (Shadows of Deep Sleep). Following the projections on the façade in previous editions, with works by artists Javier Riera, Isabel Muñoz and José Manuel Ballester, the plan this year is for Paloma Navares to take over the walls of the Naves, as she displays her art on this unusual medium.

From 12 June to 22 September, the Naves de Gamazo will also host a photo exhibition by José Manuel Ballester entitled "De arboris perennis", curated by Lola Durán, which was first presented in PHotoEspaña 2023 at the Royal Botanical Garden.

Ballester, winner of the National Photography Award and the 4th ENAIRE Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award (2023), portrays trees as the protagonists to draw attention to our relationship with the environment.

The ENAIRE Foundation's Managing Director was very pleased with their contribution to the PHotoEspaña programme, because "the Navares Exhibition is a retrospective that focuses on women, Ballester on the environment, and the photo awards support artistic creation through that most democratic medium that is photography". Asuar states that "these three exhibitions and video projections are bound to make an impression on the public, making them think and, most of all, enjoy". In this regard, she maintains that "art contributes to happiness, but also to freedom".

About ENAIRE Foundation

Is a cultural institution of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility that, in addition to managing, preserving and exhibiting the ENAIRE Collection of Contemporary Art, engages in a comprehensive annual programme of activities that focus on aeronautical art and culture. Notably, it is one of the institutions that currently provides the most support to photography through its annual prizes - which have become a benchmark for professional photographers - and by hosting exhibits.

It is the only foundation in Spain that combines the two seemingly disparate themes of art and aeronautical culture, bringing them together by undertaking a programme of activities that promote the study, research, knowledge and dissemination of aeronautical culture, integrating history and modernity to raise awareness of the world of aviation in our country.

The Naves de Gamazo are the first permanent home of the ENAIRE Collection of Contemporary Art, an example of collaboration between government agencies that was made possible thanks to the partnership and joint efforts of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, the Government of Cantabria, through the Office for Culture, Tourism and Sport, and the Port Authority of Santander, which share the operating expenses of the centre in order to ensure the present and future viability of this cultural project.
