Lumen helps innovative City of West Des Moines RecPlex merge tech, sports

Jan. 5, 2021 - The recently constructed 300,000-square foot MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex integrates innovative technology into its design to support and enhance a variety of athletic and recreational activities-including Esports. The city of West Des Moines, Iowa, selected Lumen Technologies (NYSE: LUMN) to provide network services, including Local Area Network, Wi-Fi and voice solutions, to power their state-of-the-art facility.

• What's the news: Operated by the city of West Des Moines, a new indoor athletic facility embraces tech to deliver a mix of activities across the 66-acre complex, including recreational and adaptive sports, educational programs, health clinic and a new Esports center.
• Why it matters: The MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex was built in response to citizen demand for a state-of-the-art athletic facility to meet the region's growing needs for year-round sports programs. The facility is expected to be an economic driver, accommodating community use as well as sports tourism.

"The scope and scale of the RecPlex required weaving together multiple campus networks and technologies to create a seamless visitor experience. Secure, reliable and fast connections were necessary to help create the seamless experience required by the facility's diverse competition spaces, clinical facility, special event areas and Esports gaming PCs. The athletic facility fulfills a community need for event space as well as creates a home for the increasingly popular Esports segment.

The complex is now open to the public.
