Corpus Christi Public Libraries Receive $2.4 Million in Grant Funding

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - Corpus Christi Public Libraries (CCPL) have been granted $2.4 million from the Emergency Connectivity Fund (ECF) program to provide 5,000 Wi-Fi hotspots with 5G Internet service for 12 months to the public libraries.

Library patrons without access to high-speed internet can check out a hotspot device for personal use and educational opportunities. Patrons must sign and return a statement verifying they would lack internet access without the Wi-Fi hotspot.

CCPL has partnered with Prospera Housing Community Services and Corpus Christi Housing Authority & Affiliates to distribute Wi-Fi hotspots to their residents.

The ECF, run by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), provides libraries funding to expand broadband equity. The program assists those without access to internet services sufficient to meet their educational needs.

"Corpus Christi libraries are vital in helping our residents and visitors gain access to computers, improve their skill sets, promote literacy, and improve the overall quality of life," Mayor Paulette Guajardo said.

The program is expected to launch in September 2022 with National Library Card Sign-up Month.

CCPL will provide the public with a specific date when it becomes available.
