Navy plants mangrove saplings in coastal areas of North

As part of the Mangrove Conservation Project of the Navy, a mangrove planting drive was conducted in coastal areas of the Mandaitivu Island and Ponnalai Lagoon, Jaffna under the patronage of Commander Northern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Priyantha Perera on May 20.

Under the able guidance of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne, Sri Lanka Navy has been conducting the Mangrove Conservation Project as a measure of coastal defence to prevent erosion. As an extension of this worthy effort, the Northern Naval Command set in motion today's programme by planting 3800 mangrove saplings in coastal areas of the Mandaitivu Island and Ponnalai Lagoon.

Deputy Area Commander Northern Naval Area, Heads of Departments, officers, sailors, religious dignitaries in the area, school children and teachers from the locality also took part in this mangrove planting drive.
