The British Geological Survey (BGS) and the Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (IRPI) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering common research activities in the fields of geomorphology and engineering geology, with emphasis on:
• multi-scale geomorphological and geological mapping and modelling,
• development of systems for the operational forecasting of landslides,
• geo-hydrological risk assessment in a multi-risk context, and
• impacts of global, climatic and environmental changes on geo-hydrological instability phenomena.
The formal exchange of documents between Helen Reeves, Scientific Director for Applied Geology and Geoengineering of the BGS, and Fausto Guzzetti, Director of the CNR IRPI, shown in the photo [Photo 1], took place at the General Assembly of the European Geoscience Union (EGU, [https://www.egu.eu]) underway in Vienna, Austria.
Fausto Guzzetti, Director of CNR IRPI, says 'The collaboration agreement with the BGS, one of the most advanced geological surveys in the world, is the natural continuation of six years of joint activities conducted in Europe and Asia. We are proud of the agreement, and look forward to continuing working with BGS colleagues on relevant research topics such as landslide forecasting and assessing the possible impacts of climate and environmental changes on landslides and floods. The research topics covered by the agreement are not only of scientific interest, but have an impact on the safety of the population, in Italy, Great Britain, and in many areas of the world.
Helen Reeves said: 'I am delighted that BGS and CNR IRPI have now formally signed a MoU to define our future collaboration and partnerships around our common landslide research interests. This will aid better collaboration between our organisations, which will led to fruitful joint actives in the future and builds already on our current research partnership as part of the NERC SHEAR LANDSLIP project. The BGS Landslide team are looking forward to these future activities'.
