LOS ANGELES-The last of four inmates who assaulted and severely injured a fellow prisoner at the Federal Correctional Complex in Lompoc in November 2020 has been sentenced to 36 months in federal prison, the FBI announced today.
All four defendants pleaded guilty to their roles in the assault and are listed as follows:
United States District Judge Virginia A. Phillips also ordered the defendants jointly and severally liable to pay $75,917.65 in restitution. All the defendants' sentences were ordered to run consecutively with their respective undischarged terms of incarceration.
On November 4, 2020, at the Federal Correctional Complex in Lompoc, the defendants assaulted a fellow inmate who was incarcerated in their same unit. The victim was punched in the head and fell to the ground. The defendants continued to assault the victim as he lay on the ground, lying motionless on his back. James was the only defendant to use a weapon and admitted to repeatedly striking the victim with a combination lock attached to a belt-like strap. The attack lasted 30 seconds.
The victim was hospitalized for three weeks with multiple blunt-force injuries to his head, face, mouth, arms, legs, and torso, including a broken nose and multiple fractured teeth. The victim also suffered prolonged impairment of his mental faculties, required speech therapy after discharge, and required assistance to walk.
The FBI conducted this investigation, and Assistant United States Attorney David Y. Pi of the United States Attorney's Office for the Central District of California prosecuted this case.
