The University of Toledo Medical Center has again been recognized by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation for providing LGBTQ+ inclusive patient care.

In the foundation's 2024 Healthcare Equality Index, released Tuesday, UTMC was named an LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality High Performer.

UTMC was the only hospital in northwest Ohio to receive the designation.

"We are honored UTMC received this award recognizing our commitment to creating an inclusive, welcoming environment that promotes wellness and healing," said UTMC CEO Rick Swaine.

Launched in 2007, the Healthcare Equality Index has become the nation's leading national benchmarking tool for LGBTQ+ inclusive policies and best practices in healthcare facilities.

The Healthcare Equality Index evaluates and scores healthcare facilities for their foundational policies and training in LGBTQA+ patient-centered care, LGBTQA+ patient services and support, employee policies and benefits and patient and community engagement.

The 2024 report, which is based on data collected in 2022 and 2023, included nearly 1,100 participants. Of those facilities, 462 received a high performer designation.

In addition to being a valuable tool and resource for healthcare facilities, the Health Equality Index is used by LGBTQ+ patients and their loved ones to find facilities that provide equitable and inclusive care.

UTMC has been recognized in every Healthcare Equality Index survey since 2012.
