Outreach and Services Specialist

The DC Sentencing Commission is seeking an Outreach and Services Specialist who will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring a public outreach and educational strategy with the public, policy makers, and criminal justice agencies relating to the purpose, application, and sentencing outcomes under the District's Voluntary Sentencing Guidelines. The incumbent provides a comprehensive approach to ensuring all District residents understand the purpose of the Sentencing Guidelines, how they function, and expected sentencing outcomes thorough a variety of methods, including written material, websites, social media, and in-person presentations.

Major duties include:

  • Implements the agency's multi-year Outreach and Educational Strategy, which includes a clear and concise approach to designing, overseeing, and actively promoting the Commission's social media profiles, as well as, traditional outreach activities.
  • Establishes, monitors, and maintains outreach and educational activities among partnering criminal justice agencies and public based organizations.
  • Resolves organizational and operational problems, including scheduling, logistics, presentation, and other related issues.
  • Develops partnerships with other entities: businesses, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations returning citizens and the general public to support outreach and education strategy activities. Ensures information received from participants is provided to the Sentencing Commission for review, discussion, and possible action.
  • Monitors performance indicators and conducts process improvement assessments to determine outreach and educational work plan revisions as needed.
  • Provides reports to the Executive Director and the Commission on regular basis.

The ideal candidate would have an understanding of the DC Sentencing Guidelines and the work of the Sentencing Commission. Demonstrate knowledge and experiences working with a wide variety of social media platforms to reach effectively reach diverse audiences. Proven ability to develop and use graphics, charts, tables, pictures and other forms of printed material to explain difficult and complex sentencing policy issues to both public and criminal justice partners. Experience organizing and managing projects; reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating data; and preparing analytical reports. Possess the ability to communicate extremely well both orally and in writing and to utilize tact and persuasion in gaining acceptance among criminal justice partner agencies and public based organizations. Proven ability to interact with various types of personalities and to coach and coordinate interdisciplinary teams.

Applicants should have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in communications, marketing, or other related fields or a combination of education and direct experience. Two years' experience with outreach activities preferred.

This is an Excepted Service position located within the District of Columbia Sentencing Commission (SCDC), which is an independent agency within the District of Columbia government.
