Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Achieves Healthgrades 2022 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award™

Also recognized for exceptional patient outcomes in gynecologic hysterectomy surgery

New Brunswick, NJ - Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) today announced that it has earned the 2022 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award™ from Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and hospitals. This distinction places the hospital's maternity program among the top ten percent of hospitals evaluated for overall labor and delivery care. The hospital was also a five-star recipient for Natural Birth for the second consecutive year, as well as a five-star recipient for Hysterectomy in the Gynecologic Surgery section of the 2022Women's Care ratings.

RWJUH was also recently recognized as one of America's Best Maternity Hospitals by Newsweek for the second year in a row. In the most recent release of The Leapfrog Group's hospital safety ratings, the RWJUH maternity service achieved the standard in all six maternity standards, which is the highest possible score.

"There is no service more essential to our communities than providing women and their families access to safe, equitable and evidence-based services for labor and delivery," said Bill Arnold, President and Chief Executive Officer of RWJUH. "This award reflects the commitment among our physicians, Magnet-recognized nurses and the entire regional perinatal team to improve maternal health in the communities we serve through the most advanced and compassionate maternal care."

"At RWJUH, we strive every day to provide safe, comfortable and consistently high-quality care to all who entrust us with the delivery of their babies," said Mark V. Sauer, M.D., M.S., Professor and Chair, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, Senior Associate Dean for Women's Health, Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and RWJUH. "Receiving this award is deeply gratifying and this recognition validates the expertise, dedication and commitment of our maternity center team. I am very proud of all of them."

Healthgrades analyzed labor and delivery patient outcomes data for all patients from 16 individual states from 2018-2020. During this time, if all hospitals included in this analysis, as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, on average, 135,637 patients could have avoided complications. *

Additionally, from 2018-2020, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, have, on average, a 41.2% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award. *

RWJUH delivers more than 2,500 babies annually in its designated Regional Perinatal Center, the highest level of maternal and neonatal care. In addition to state-of-the-art technology, RWJUH's maternity center team includes nearly 50 board-certified obstetricians, five Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialists, a team of genetic counselors and nationally certified Magnet-recognized nurses. RWJUH is training the next generation of obstetricians through our residency program and MFM fellowship program with faculty at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

RWJUH is also home to a Level IV Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, with a team of board-certified neonatologists, nationally certified nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers, speech and physical therapists, lactation consultants, nutritionists, and child life specialists. The maternity service is closely integrated with The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at RWJUH, working to get families off to a healthy start and keep on growing.

"Through our 2022 Obstetrics & Gynecology Awards, we seek to recognize facilities who excel in delivering superior care for Ob-Gyn patients," said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and head of Data Science, Healthgrades. "We are proud to name RWJUH as a 2022 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award recipient and look forward to their continued efforts to make maternal health a priority."
