Rawlins Library Goes Fine Free

Rawlins Municipal Library is no longer charging late fees for books and other materials that are returned after their due dates.

"What's important is for the materials to get returned so that others can enjoy them," said Abby Edwardson, Library Director.

According to Edwardson, the Library Board recently changed policy. Library staff noticed that people were hoarding materials because they didn't want to pay a late fee. Consequently, the policy was changed to encourage the materials to be returned at any point.

"We just want the materials back, and so do our other patrons!" said Edwardson. "We often have waiting lists for our books and movies."

Rawlins does have a few mechanisms in place to encourage book returns though.

"We have a really slick text or email notification system to remind people that their materials are overdue," said Edwardson.

To opt into the reminder notifications, people should visit the circulation desk at the library.

Additionally, those who have outstanding materials aren't able to check out other books, movies, or backpack kits until the past due ones have been returned to the library.

Edwardson added, "If things never get returned or they get damaged, then people might need to pay to have the item replaced."

In 2021, Rawlins Library loaned out about 65,500 books and other materials. It maintains a collection of more than 125,000 books, eBooks, digital magazine and other items for research and entertainment, and provides a variety of free online continuing education programs for everything from sign language to QuickBooks to meal preparation.
