Happening in Parliament This Week

Parliament, Sunday 12 June 2022 - The National Assembly will kick-start this week's programme with a debate on the Appropriation Bill during its hybrid sitting on Tuesday.

The Appropriation Bill provides for the appropriation of money by Parliament from the National Revenue Fund (NRF) as required by section 213 of the Constitution and section 26 of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA). The Minister of Finance, Mr Enoch Godongwana, tabled the Bill in Parliament on 23 February 2022.

During the same sitting, the House will also consider the recommendation of a person to fill a vacancy on the Electoral Commission.

Meanwhile, the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) will consider the report of the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members' Interests on the 2021 Register of Members' Interests- Late Disclosures: contravention of the Code of Ethical Conduct and Disclosure of Members Interests. Budget Votes for the Department of Basic Education and Social Development will also be considered during the sitting.

On Wednesday, both Houses will, during their separate sittings, debate Youth Day.

On the same day, the NA will also consider the candidate nominated for appointment as Inspector-General of Intelligence Services and the report on the Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry to recommend suitable candidates for appointment as Chairperson of the Board of National Lotteries Commission.

The House will wrap up the day and its programme for this term with a debate on a matter of national importance on fuel price hikes.

The National Assembly Members are scheduled to go on constituency period from 20 June, while the NCOP constituency period will start on 27 June.

The Portfolio Committee on Environment, Forestry, and Fisheries is currently holding the Northern Cape leg of public hearings on the National Veld and Forest Fire Amendment Bill. The Bill aims to improve the administration of the Act, deal with several critical technical enhancements and align the legislation with the post-1996 Constitutional framework.

The Northern Cape hearings started in the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality on Friday, went to John Taolo District Municipality on Saturday, and are currently in the Pixley ka Seme District Municipality.

The Committee will then proceed to Mpumalanga for the next round of public hearings.
