Treasurer Smith Encourages Iowans to Search Their Name and Find Green this Spring

DES MOINES - State Treasurer Roby Smith is springing into April by encouraging Iowans to search for their name in the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt, Iowa's only legitimate unclaimed property source. "New properties are always being added to our database and in the past six months we've added $50.7 million and 380,377 names," stated Smith. "The goal of Great Iowa Treasure Hunt is to get that money back into the hands of rightful owners. By searching your name, you could be seeing green this spring."

Each year, millions of dollars are turned over after financial institutions and businesses lose contact with the owner. The State Treasurer's Office safeguards these assets through the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt program until they are reunited with their rightful owner. "You can search any time to see if you or someone you know has cash to claim," Smith added. "Even if you've searched and claimed in the past, check our website again. It's more prevalent than one may think to lose track of your money or assets. Spring is the start of new beginnings and connecting Iowans with their unclaimed property is always our goal. Currently, my office is holding more than $532 million in unclaimed funds for past and present Iowans to claim."

Common examples of unclaimed property include dormant checking and savings accounts, uncashed checks, utility refunds, lost stocks, life insurance policies and contents from abandoned safe deposit boxes. To date, Great Iowa Treasure Hunt has returned over $363 million to more than one million individuals.
