The first section of the Pirámides - Tulancingo - Pachuca highway carried out with high viscosity asphalt with RARx additive is operative



Of the 45 km that have been renovated on the Pirámides - Tulancingo - Pachuca highway in Mexico, at the beginning of October 2018, we have completed the first 11 kilometers where we used RARx additive. Specifically, the section between kilometer 36 and kilometer 46.5.

The work, under the concession of Sacyr Concessions and executed by Sacyr Engineering and Infrastructures, was a real technological milestone since it was performed with an asphalting solution with mixtures containing high content of asphalt cement and tire powder thanks to the RARx additive.

In this section, around 400 tons of RARx have been used, which has entailed the use of 240 tons of tire dust and the reuse of rubber equivalent to more than 25,000 used tires.

This technique also allows the optimization of the asphalt layers and guarantees a reduction of the carbon footprint, with full environmental improvement in the whole process. The high quality of the asphalt layer and its high content in asphalt cement modified with the RARx additive, is a guarantee of greater durability.

Sacyr continues with the works of the remaining sections which total 183 kilometers of track. Once this work is completed, it is estimated that more than 150,000 tires will have been reused, which shows the positive impact on the environment of the use of RARx on the highway.

Sacyr Group and CIRTEC have presented this technology at the AMACC Congress (Mexican Asphalt Association) in Tijuana and the IRF (International Road Federation) in Mexico City, raising awareness about this technology to promote the development of road infrastructures while being respectful toward the environment.
