The Future is Now: Time for Youth Action

The Latin America and the Caribbean Youth Summit is organized by the World Bank as part of the regional events of the Global Youth Summit 2022.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, May 26 at 1 p.m. (Washington DC time) and will be broadcast on Zoom and YouTube.

  • The theme for the LAC Youth Summit 2022 is "The Future is Now: Time for Youth Action" and will focus on the region´s youth social leaders and entrepreneurs between 18 and 35 years old for the participant's countries, interested in developing and expanding issues like access to formal jobs after completing intermediate school, improving, and meliorating access to education, guarantee and seek for gender equality and stand for climate change mitigation and reduction policies.

    Established in 2013, the Youth Summit is an annual event hosted by the World Bank Group (WBG) to engage with youth globally on the most pressing topics facing our generation. The WBG Youth Summit is an affiliate of the Youth-to-Youth (Y2Y) network, the largest volunteer organization at the WBG, which aims to inspire and empower youth within and outside the institution.

    The theme for the 2022 World Bank Group Youth Summit is "Unlocking the Power of Inclusion for Equitable Growth", with activities and engagements in different regions and at the World Bank Group headquarters in Washington DC.

  • Carlos Felipe Jaramillo

    World Bank Vice President forLatin America and Caribbean

    Carlos Felipe Jaramillo is the World Bank Vice President for the Latin America and the Caribbean Region, overseeing Bank relations with 31 countries and a portfolio of ongoing projects, technical assistance and grants of almost US$32 billion. Under his leadership, the Bank's operations in the region focus on fueling growth, reducing poverty, supporting equality and protecting the environment.

    Oneall Marcy Fenesh Massamba

    Manager of the Youth Summit 2022

    O'Neall Massamba is the Manager of the Youth Summit 2022. She joined the World Bank Group in February 2020 and currently works as a Consultant in the Development Economics Vice Presidency Unit and the PPP Group. Prior to joining the World Bank Group, Ms. Massamba worked for over three years as a construction lawyer for Eurovia (VINCI Group). Ms. Massamba also worked in one of the biggest law firm in Luxembourg in their Private Equity and Real Estate Investment practice. Ms. Massamba holds a Master's degree (L.L.M) in Business and Finance Law from the George Washington University Law School (USA), as well as a Master's degree in Economics and Business Law from Université Paris I - Panthéon Sorbonne (France) and a Master's Degree in Comparative Business Law (with honors) from Université Paris V - Descartes (France). She also holds a Bachelor's degree in Law and a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Université Paris I - Panthéon Sorbonne (France). Ms. Massamba is an attorney admitted to practice in the State of New York, an active member of the ABA Construction Law Forum

    Julieta Martínez

    Climate Change and Gender Activist. Founder of Tremendas, Chile

    Julieta is an 18-year-old student, founder of the Tremendas global action platform, a group that promotes the empowerment of girls, adolescents and young people, inviting them to put their skills and talents at the service of the community to generate social impact. Julieta founded Tremendas at the age of 15 and that same year she was recognized as a Young Agent of Change by the Ashoka Foundation. In 2019 she was a finalist for the Inspiring Girls International World Cup in London. In addition, in 2019 she was invited to participate in COP 25 in Madrid, being selected by the United Nations as one of the 4 young Speakers of the High Level Event on Action for Climate Empowerment. In January 2020, she participated in the Summit of Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, as part of the UN Women Chile delegation. In February 2020, she was selected to participate in the Climate Reality Leadership Global Training program, led by Al Gore, from which she graduated in September of the same year. In November 2020, she was selected as a member of the select group of global ambassadors of the Youth Task Force Beijing +25 of UN Women. She is the only Latin American teenager and the youngest of the group worldwide. In 2020 she co-founded the international climate activism network "Latinas for Climate". In 2021 she was recognized by the World Economic Forum (Chile) as Girl Leader of the Future. Currently, Julieta is an ambassador for "Concausa", an initiative of Unicef and América Solidaria; Ashoka and WWF. In addition, she is a member of the adolescent council of "My voice counts", a joint initiative of América Solidaria, Unicef, the Ombudsman for Children and the Network of Universities for Children. She has been invited to speak at renowned events, such as the Women Economic Forum Latin America (Mexico 2020); Future Summit (Poland 2020); Generation Equality Forum of UN Women (Mexico 2021); Women International Day of UN Women and the European Union (Geneva 2021); Fourth Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on sustainable development; Ecosoc (New York 2021) and Nesi Global Forum (Málaga, Spain). In July 2021, Julieta participated in the Generation Equality Forum, held in Paris. At the meeting, the young activist shared the stage with figures such as the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Nadia Murad; businesswoman Melinda Gates; the US vice president, Kamala Harris; the French ambassador for women's rights, Delphine O; and former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. In September 2021, she is selected as one of the 11 world fellows of Girl Rising, which is an international organization that defends the school education of girls. Together with Girl Rising, Julieta will direct her first documentary focused on girls as a climate solution. At the end of September 2021, she was a Chilean delegate at Youth4Climate in Milan, Italy. For this instance, it was selected by the United Nations, the World Bank and the Italian government. In November 2021, she participated in Cop 26 in Glasgow as a panelist and speaker, sharing the stage with the First Minister of Scotland and Christiana Figueres, former executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. In February 2022, she was named an honorary member for Latin America of the international organization Earthday.

    Bruno Correia

    Education Entrepreneur and Scholar, Brazil

    Bruno is 23 years old, has a degree in History and is an educational entrepreneur and scholar who lives in the East Zone of the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Bruno studied in public schools in the East Zone a peripheral region of São Paulo all his life. At the end of the high school he was approved to study History at the Federal university of São paulo, one of the best universities in Latin America. Throughout his journey, he noticed that only 2% of the people who applied for the national college entrance exam managed to get into college, and that some of his colleagues had given up studying because they needed to work to support their families. This led Bruno to work together with colleagues to found the Cursinho Leila Regina preparatory program at age of 17. Since 2016, the program has helped over 700 students study for college entrance exams. Bruno has dedicated himself to helping young people who live on the outskirts of cities and cannot afford a preparatory program to access. In 2018 he participated in an activist meeting at the UN Global Compact office in São Paulo and in 2019 he was invited by Soka University of America to present his social project at the 15th Soka Education Conference in Aliso Viejo, California. Today, Bruno continues to work at Leila Regina as Head of Operations and is teacher, humanities coordinator and cultural manager at the NGO Meraki. He is also currently working as Social Media at COMPA College and interested in Communication and Advertising, focusing on the experience of young people in games and social transformation through the eSports market in Brazil.

    Gabriela Morris

    Senator and Youth and Sports Spokeperson, Jamaica

    Gabriela Morris is a 25-year-old youth advocate, entrepreneur and a Senator appointed to the Upper house of the Jamaican Parliament. She is also a member of the People's National Party, the Opposition Spokesperson on Youth and Sport and Chairperson of the Opposition's Junior Shadow Cabinet. Gabriela's foray into leadership started very early through involvement in the civic affairs of her hometown Montego Bay Jamaica where she served as a Junior Councilor for in the local municipality. In 2016, Morris matriculated to the University of the West Indies Mona Campus (UWI) where she completed her bachelor's degree in Pharmacology and is finalizing her master's degree in Communication for Social and Behavioral Change. During her tenure at University, Senator Morris served the campus community as Chairwoman of the only sorority on campus-Mary Seacole Hall and Vice President of The Guild of Students. Her service to the over 16,000 students of the UWI and her political involvement in the youth arms of the PNP, propelled her into national politics and in 2020, Gabriela became the Youngest Senator in Jamaica's history at the age of 23 years old.

    Claudia Taboada

    Director of Science, Technology and Environment at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic

    Claudia Taboada currently serves as Director of Science, Technology and Environment at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic, the first young woman to hold the position. She has a background in international cooperation and science. She has more than 8 years of experience in multilateral affairs and more than a decade in youth participation and empowerment. She has represented her country in more than a dozen youth forums on issues ranging from climate action, migration and non-formal education. In her spare time she is an active member of her community, spearheading initiatives that engage young people with the Sustainable Development Goals, climate action and peace.

    Carolina Fernández

    Director of Programs and Projects at Asociación Tierranuestra, Paraguay

    Caro "Karumbe" Fernández Aldana works on the sustainable development of communities with a special focus on promoting the participation of the girls, boys, adolescents, and young people. She has been working for more than 15 years in the organization Tierranuestra, for the Sounds of the Earth program, which seeks to train children, adolescents and young people in values and leadership through music, in communities where the network has Thematic Orchestras (of recycled instruments based on garbage, water container elements, among others).

    Jessica Belmont

    Communications at The World Bank

    Jessica is a communications proffesional with focus on audiovisual and digital production. She is Mexican, and has more than 15 years of work experience, of which the last 10 years have been developed in international organizations.

    Francisco Winter

    LAC Regional Coordinator, World Bank Group Youth Summit 2022

    Chilean national and with a degree in business and administration, he joined the World Bank in 2017 when the country office in Chile was opened. Since then it has helped strengthen the work of the World Bank portfolio in various areas such as finance, competitiveness, innovation, decentralization, social protection, renewable energies and climate change.
