Anaheim City Council appoints Gloria Ma’ae to represent District 2 in west Anaheim

ANAHEIM, Calif.(Sept. 14, 2021) - Community member Gloria Ma'ae has been appointed to Anaheim's City Council to represent District 2 in west Anaheim.

The City Council voted to appoint Ma'ae on Tuesday. She will take the District 2 seat at the Council's next meeting on Sept. 28.

Ma'ae, pronounced "mah-ay," is a former administrator for United Parcel Service Inc., where she spent 34 years before retiring in 2012. She has lived in District 2 for 42 years.

Since 2000, Ma'ae has been involved in several city and civic boards and groups, including:

• Serving as a current member of the Anaheim Community Services Board, which advises the City Council on community and social services
• Serving as chair of the North Anaheim Neighborhood Council, a group connecting neighborhoods with the city
• Taking part in an Anaheim Police Department program known as PACE that connects residents with public safety
• Serving on Support Our Anaheim Resort, an advocacy group for The Anaheim Resort
• Serving as District 2 chair and a director of Anaheim First, a group formed to offer input to the city on spending, investment and improving neighborhoods

"Gloria is District 2 through and through," Mayor Harry SIdhu said. "For more than 20 years, she has worked to better her neighborhood after deciding to take on challenges facing her family and those of others in the community. That will now be her focus on the City Council, where she will help us address and improve quality of life in District 2. She also understands the importance of a strong Anaheim economy and what that means for our neighborhoods. You will not find a more genuine representative for District 2 on our Council."

She was appointed in accordance with Anaheim's city charter, which calls for the City Council to name a replacement in the event of a vacancy. If the Council is unable to make an appointment within 60 days, a special election is required.

Ma'ae will serve out the reminder of the current District 2 term through November 2022, when the seat is up for regular election. At that time, she has the option of running for election to represent District 2 through 2026.

Ten candidates applied and were considered. All candidates were on hand Tuesday and spoke before and answered questions from the Council.

One candidate, Rudy Gaona, withdrew his application during the meeting.

Candidates also had the chance to meet with Council members ahead of Tuesday's appointment consideration.

District 2 stretches from Euclid Street to parts of Magnolia Avenue and Brookhurst Street as its western edge.

The district is bounded by the Riverside (91) Freeway to the north and Katella Avenue to the south. You can see a district map here.

On the City Council, Ma'ae joins five other district representatives and Anaheim's mayor, who represents the city at large.
