SRFD to Declare June 6th Official Start of Wildfire Season in Santa Rosa

The City of Santa Rosa Fire Department will officially declare Monday, June 6, 2022, as the start of this year's wildfire season in Santa Rosa. This date also signals the start of weed abatement inspections. The date has been determined based on drought conditions, current weather conditions and long-range forecasts. The Fire Department is asking residents, especially those who live within or around the City's Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) area, to take steps to prepare their properties in anticipation of an active wildfire season.

Since early April the City of Santa Rosa has been working to reduce the risk of wildfires by performing weed abatement activities on city owned properties. This includes areas like the Skyhawk Open Space, Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Trailhead and Parktrail Open Space. Work was also completed in larger park areas outside of the WUI including A Place To Play and Youth Community Park. Crews are also conducting landscape maintenance on center medians and along roadsides in and around our WUI.

The Santa Rosa Fire Department will initiate annual weed abatement inspections beginning after fire season starts on June 6 to ensure owners of required properties cut weeds and seasonal grasses that are over four inches in height and maintain this practice throughout the fire season. Properties required to take this measure include those within the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), on all vacant lots across Santa Rosa (including those in fire rebuilding areas), or on developed properties with more than a half-acre of unimproved land.
