Hoosiers Will See Higher Gas Prices, More Crime in Communities – All Thanks to the Indiana GOP

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today criticized the Indiana Republican Party for burdening Hoosiers with higher gas taxes and endangering their communities. Starting today, motorists will see a gas tax at the pump and a new state law allowing any person to carry a gun without a permit. A rise in crime and high gas prices are Hoosiers' future - and the Indiana GOP's extremist agenda is solely responsible for it. The INGOP is putting their special interests ahead of creating a better future for Hoosiers.

"For Hoosiers wondering why their taxes are high and they keep seeing more gun violence, they can look to Governor Holcomb and the Indiana Republican Party. They've chosen to put an extremist agenda ahead of solving the kitchen-table issues voters care about most," said Lauren Ganapini, executive director of the Indiana Democratic Party. "Democrats in Indianapolis and in Washington have called for the state to pause its gas tax, voted to hold oil companies accountable for price gouging, and opposed - along with the Indiana State Police - the dangerous permitless carry law. We're listening to voters and are fighting for a better future for their families."

Higher Gas Taxes Coming to Hoosiers

Fox59 : "The Indiana Department of Revenue recently published the gasoline use tax calculation for July. The calculation shows the rate starting July 1 will be 29.1 cents per gallon, up from 24 cents in June."

NWI Times: "A preplanned tax hike enacted in 2017 by the Republican-controlled General Assembly and Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb is partially responsible for the increase.

Under House Enrolled Act 1002, sponsored by state Rep. Ed Soliday, R-Valparaiso, the state gasoline tax was boosted 10 cents per gallon on July 1, 2017, and automatically goes up an additional penny per gallon every July 1 through 2024 to try to maintain its purchasing power relative to inflation."

Permitless Carry to Endanger Communities across Indiana

Indiana Capital Chronicle: "From release: Officer-involved shootings increased by 12.9% in 10 states that relaxed permits between 2014 and 2020.

Indiana waived the gun permit requirement during the 2022 session but faced significant opposition from ISP Superintendent Doug Carter."

Carter blamed the "outside influence of national associations or political posturing" for pushing the permit repeal issue in the Legislature, where Republicans have better than two-thirds majorities in both the House and Senate.

"This is the problem with the supermajority. It stifles, prohibits and oftentimes limits public debate," Carter said. "I sure hope you choose to show deference to law enforcement professionals who understand the magnitude and the frontline effects of this legislation, rather than the possibility of getting reelected or unelected the next primary."
