SWOSU Psychology Honors Student Achievements

The 2024 SWOSU Psychology Awards & Reception ceremony scholarship recipients.

The Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) Department of Psychology recently hosted its 2024 SWOSU Psychology Awards & Reception ceremony on Wed., April 24 at the SWOSU Pioneer Event Center's Skyview Suite. The event was attended by students, guests, and participants from the new Foundations of Psychology and Capstone classes.

The awards ceremony began with Dr. Stephen Burgess, Chair of the Psychology Department, introducing the 2023-2024 Psychology Club officers and highlighting their activities throughout the academic year. The Distinguished Scholars and the graduating seniors were also recognized, with ten graduating seniors with an overall GPA of 3.5-4.0 awarded honor medallions. Twelve students were awarded scholarships for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year.

The Robert S. Tyler Outstanding Student of Psychology Award for the 2023-2024 academic year was presented to graduating senior Breanna Guthrie from Newalla, OK. Guthrie's accomplishments include serving as the President of the SWOSU Psychology Club, earning Distinguished Scholar status, contributing as a Psychology Statistics tutor and student research assistant, and graduating Cum Laude in the upcoming commencement ceremony. Guthrie plans to continue her studies at SWOSU and obtain a master's degree in School Psychology, followed by a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology.

Another distinguished recipient was Victoria Roper, also a graduating senior, who received the Harold H. Budde Award for Exceptional Achievement in Psychology for the 2023-2024 academic year. Roper will be graduating Summa Cum Laude with a perfect 4.0 GPA. She was listed in the President's List throughout all her time at SWOSU and received the SWOSU Academic Achievement T-Award Scholarship from 2020 to 2024. Roper plans to pursue a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology at Denver University, with goals to work clinically with young adults or pursue a career in academia.

The university extends congratulations to the student awardees and looks forward to seeing their continued academic and professional growth.
