Brown Announces Nearly $400,000 for Epidemic and STEM Research at The University of Dayton

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced that the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded two grants totaling $397,705 to University of Dayton to fund research to enhance national preparedness for potential future epidemic outbreaks and expand wireless communication capabilities.
"Research in science and mathematics is critical to create jobs and improve our economy. We unleash more American innovation when everyone is able to participate and we nurture all Ohio talent," Brown said. "The University of Dayton is one of Ohio's premier universities. These awards will help it advance our knowledge and continue Ohio's leadership in innovation."
Funding from NSF includes:
  • $231,185 to enhance national preparedness for early and effective mitigation of potential future epidemic outbreaks and broaden the participation of underrepresented groups in research and training.
  • $166,520 to develop generation wireless communications to support heterogeneous devices with different capabilities on communications, computations, and power to deliver applications with various performance demands.
Brown has cosponsored the Supporting Early Career Researchers Actto establish a two-year pilot program at NSF to award grants to highly qualified, early-career investigators at independent, higher-education research institutions for up to two years. This will help prevent research talent loss due to job market disruptions caused by the pandemic.
NSF supports research and education in all the non-medical fields of science and engineering.
