Readout from World Bank Group President David Malpass’s Meeting with President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan

SHARM-EL-SHEIKH, November 9, 2022- Yesterday, World Bank Group President David Malpass met with President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan.

President Malpass and President Rahmon discussed the challenging outlook for the Tajik economy, which is facing increased uncertainty amid regional instability. President Malpass affirmed the World Bank Group's (WBG) commitment to supporting Tajikistan through a combination of financing, technical assistance, and analytical work.

President Malpass and President Rahmon talked about the importance of strengthening governance and transparency of state-owned enterprises as well as regulatory reforms in the water and energy sectors. President Malpass noted that IDA is currently preparing a technical assistance project to further improve the sustainability of the Rogun Hydro Power Projectaimed at contributing to better macro-fiscal conditions and improved operations of the project.

President Malpass and President Rahmon also spoke about investments in climate adaptation and resilience. President Malpass affirmed that the WBG is continuing to support this agenda with significant financing as well as capacity building. In this context, President Malpass also noted ongoing discussions around IDA's Catastrophe Deferred Drawdown instrument, which would increase the disaster risk financing options for Tajikistan.
