Parliament, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 - The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training will tomorrow (Thursday, 24 January 2018) visit the University of Fort Hare as part of its weeklong oversight.
The oversight visit comes against the backdrop of the President's announcement of free tertiary education. The Committee has been visiting a number of institutions in the Eastern Cape Province to assess their readiness for the 2018 academic year, in particular admissions and registration processes.
The Committee will take into consideration the university's capacity to accommodate the expansion of access to education and training. It will also consider the measures the university has put in place to ensure that students qualify in their chosen courses of study, as this will expand the country's pool of skills, contribute towards the reduction of unemployment and inequality, and help the country realise its developmental goals.
The Committee will engage with the university on its plans to expand infrastructure, in particular student accommodation and other teaching and learning facilities, and some of the administrative issues that may impact on the academic enterprise.
Details of the visits are as follows:
Date: Thursday, 25 January 2018
Time: 9.30 am
Venue: University of Fort Hare (Alice campus)
