Sykes under observation in hospital for severe concussion, no further injuries determined

British rider Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) remains in hospital after being diagnosed with severe concussion following a Race 2 incident during the Hyundai N Catalunya Round during the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship's second visit to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Sykes was initially diagnosed with a head injury and concussion following the Turn 1 incident and was transported to Catalunya Hospital for further assessments. He remains there where he has been diagnosed with severe concussion, but no further injuries have been determined following the assessments. With the current situation, it is anticipated by BMW that Sykes will leave hospital on Wednesday. The next round of the WorldSBK season takes place this weekend and it is currently unclear whether Sykes will be in Jerez.

"We are in constant contact with Tom," says BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director Marc Bongers. "He is in good spirits and is back to his usual self, cracking jokes. We are delighted that he has come through this accident relatively well. He remains under observation due to the severe concussion, but no further injuries have been determined. We now have to wait and see what this coming weekend will look like. We will provide more information as soon as we get it. We would like to thank the track marshals, the medical staff at the circuit and in the hospital, and everyone who helped Tom so well after his accident and who are continuing to help him."
